This is the bee’s knees for growing all your wood-loving species of mushrooms on - Lion’s Mane, Shiitake, Oysters, they all love a bit of this.
These species of mushrooms have evolved to grab a cool little niche: just like a crab has evolved to be able to imitate a 1980s BBC TV presenter and give your bottom a sneaky little pinch before scuttling off sideways, these have evolved to be able to literally eat trees. They believe that Ronald Regan was right (jesus fuck it pains me even writing that) and that trees do cause pollution, and so they put all their upgrade points into the Beaver skill tree.
The non-ridiculous (but still a bit simplified) explanation is that most plants use a complex polymer called lignin in cell walls which amongst other things, helps provide a mad amount of rigidity. It does a lot of other cool stuff too (helps prevent disease by literally blocking the way in, helps direct water around). It is also a massive twat for organisms to break down and eat, hence why we can use wood for building and whatnot.
So your saprotrophic (wood-eating) mycelium has evolved to be able to eat the stuff that most other organisms can’t, like lignin! This gives it a decent leg-up in nature, but also means that we can basically use another food source as the substrate, because nothing else really can make use of it. We’d still start off with a bag of grain, for sure (cramming the nutrients and water into the mycelium), and then transfer into this once your grain is colonised, because pound-for-pound there’s a lot more available nutrients in grain. Having said that, you could just squirt some liquid culture in here and it would start colonising, you just might end up with less mushrooms.
If you’ve got a big garage or that sort of thing then yup, you can grow wood-loving species directly in logs but not everyone’s got access to that kind of space, and it can be a hard sell to your partner when you’re like “uuuhhhhh yeah one of the kids has gotta move out because that’s the log room now”, so we reckon these bags are worth a go before the Social get involved.
Premium organic hardwood, smashed to smithereens, mixed together with some nutrient-rich organic bran, hydrated perfectly before being pasteurised, then sent out to you to grow delicious mushrooms on. Send us some pictures of your gourmet grows by the way, we wanna see them!
