5 PDYA Agar Slants: what’s this all about?
If you’re experimenting with lots of different mushroom strains at the same time, you might find that you end up with a bit much on your plate at once: all your agar plates are ready to go at the same time, and there’s only so many hours in the day (and only so much space in your monotubs)!
You could try and slow the growth on your plates a little by putting them in the fridge, but you’ll find that the mycelium will, over time, take up all the available nutrients in the agar, and eventually all of the available moisture. You might even have mushrooms beginning to grow straight on the plate: yeah, it’s a fun novelty but it’s not actually that useful, and is a bit of a waste of your resources.
And that exact scenario is what agar slants were designed to solve! It’s the tried-and-tested potato dextrose and yeast extract combo that everyone knows and loves, with a slightly craftier form. We angle the vials as the agar is poured that’s why it’s called a slant) to create a usable surface area but with a much greater depth that a standard shallow agar plate. There’s the same amount of nutritious agar, but it takes longer for the mycelium to access, which means it’ll stay alive for much longer. The slanted angle also means that any condensation runs down the side of the slant and doesn’t just pool on top of your mycelium, which makes this particular form factor absolutely ideal for long-term fridge storage. Use these, and you can have a whole load of mushroom genetics ready to grow, at the time that suits you best. Science: it’s for everyone.
You will need to be using a SAB at the absolute minimum (and that’s still gambling), but we’d recommend a Flow unit for guaranteed results.
