Sterile Popcorn Grain for Mushroom Grain Spawn

Like the song goes, “I really like corn. Why? It’s corn, a big lump with knobs”. 

In our quest to find the perfect grain spawn for mushrooms, we try a lot of things out in the MycoPunks Test Kitchen. Sometimes they don’t work, like the time we tried to get Kav colonised by mycelium (we wanted a mushroom golem for the office and he was the closest person), but sometimes they work amazingly and it turns out popcorn is bang-on (hey hey hey) for mushroom grain spawn!

This was originally a limited-edition test run, but it’s been so successful that it’s now titled Sterile Popcorn Grain and is a main product. We’re proud of you, little popcorn grains, you’re going above and beyond. 

Popcorn needs a bit of finessing to get it ready for you - we’ve gotta work a little bit of the ol’ MycoPunks magic on it for your mycelium to be happy, so we start off with some non-GMO popcorn. We then soak it for a whole day, before cooking it up for almost an hour. After that, we put it into either a 1kg or 1.5kg Unicorn Bag (up to you), sterilise it for 90 minutes, and the end result is something that is one of the quickest colonising grain bags we’ve seen. 

Popcorn is stacked full of stuff that your mycelium needs to produce mushrooms, like iron, magnesium, potassium, and vitamin B3. We’ve added the right amount of hydration, and the final piece of the puzzle is the relatively small grain size which gives loads of surface area to make sure everything’s nice and rapid.

Storage:

• Shelf stable for 6 weeks but best to use it straight away
• Say it with me: somewhere cool and dark, please
• Not the fridge or the freezer though, a cupboard or something
• Store upright
• Don’t cover the white filter patch or you’ll suffocate your mycelium
