Yes, you can grow mushrooms on popcorn, what a crazy world. Even better, it’s not just possible, it’s pretty much perfect for it - if you want a fast-colonising, affordable grain to start your mycelium off with, look no further.

Popcorn is a little blinder of a snack (sweet and salty mix please, chum), but it’s not just good for cramming into your gullet at the cinema, lots of different stuff wants to chow down on popcorn, including (you’ll never guess) mushroom mycelium! Here’s why (unpopped) popcorn is so good:

The grain size is reasonably small, but because they’re nice and round you still get a decent amount of surface area. This means the mycelium can spread all over the grain, get inside, take the nutrients, and move to the next grain efficiently, so it’s a really rapid colonising grain.

On top of that, the nutrient profile is top-notch, you’ve got:

Storage:

• As always, cool and dark
• Don’t freeze it as popcorn has some moisture inside it and that’ll shred the cells
