We pour a shitload of agar plates on the regular because it seems everyone’s upping their home mushroom cultivation game and getting into the science of mycology (which we think is amazing). Warms our wonky little hearts.
As a company, we’re always looking for ways to reduce waste as it’s shit for the environment and also it’s just money down the drain (literally in this case) at the end of the day. Often, after we’ve poured a customer’s order, we’ve got a bit of agar left in the bottle that won’t be enough for another whole set of plates.
So we had a bit of a brainwave - rather than just pouring it down the sink, we can pour a few extra for each custom order, and we’ll make up mad multipacks with random mixes and colours.
If you buy this not only are you doing a bit of good by reducing waste, you’re also likely to get your agar quicker as it’s not being custom poured for ya, and it’s a bit cheaper. Decent.
We will try our best to give a good variety in each pack, but basically you get what you get, like it says on the tin, it’s anarchy!
You might get our LME agar, you might get some lovely MEYA, perhaps a few PDYA, who knows, it all depends on the hand fate deals you. Packs won’t include anti-biotic agar or water agar because they’ve got very niche applications.
Pros:
- You can’t choose what you get, sometimes life comes at you fast
- Might be nine pink LME and one black PDYA, who knows
- May awaken something inside you
Cons:
- You can’t choose what you get, sometimes life comes at you fast
- Might be nine pink LME and one black PDYA, who knows
- May awaken something inside you
Credit to the team for coming up with this. 🍻

Pre-Pour Agar FAQ
How do I store my agar?
Store in a cool dry place like a cupboard, don't store in the fridge.
Plates must be sealed after use or contamination will occur.
Some condensation is expected during transit, keep at an even temp for a few days before use.
How do I prevent contamination?
Spray down the packaging of your agar before opening and only open in an aseptic workspace E.g. in a still air box or in front of an Flow Unit.
How long does agar last?
Use within two months of the sterilisation date label.
Agar dries out over time, often it is fine up to 6 months from arriving but at your own risk.
Can I reuse the petri dishes after use?
The dishes used for our pre-pour agar are not autoclavable therefore they cannot be re-used for agar pours.
We like to use them to store mushroom spore prints after use.
